Garden protection nets, uncovered pools, and drainage pits are other classic traps. A hedgehog trapped in a net breathes continuously and tries to bite the mesh, often worsening the entanglement. In this specific case, a calm human intervention with thick gloves and scissors is justified.
Coexistence with dogs poses a recurring problem. A curious dog approaching a hedgehog triggers a violent breath and a defensive roll, but the dog’s persistence keeps the animal in a prolonged state of stress. Generally, removing the dog is enough to resolve the situation within a few minutes.
The hedgehog’s breath remains primarily an effective communication tool, selected over millions of years of evolution. The best attitude in response to this sound is to listen, evaluate the context, and then, in the vast majority of cases, leave the animal alone.
